A 20-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday and charged with the stabbing death of a Union Township Deli Owner, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow and Union Township Police Director Dan Zieser.
Daivon K. Brinson DOB: 3/15/1989 of Newark, surrendered to homicide detectives at the Prosecutor’s Office in Elizabeth.
Brinson was identified as the principal suspect in the Nov. 30, 2009 homicide of Mohinder Singh, the owner of the Three Stooges Deli on Springfield Avenue in Union Township.
According to the investigation thus far, it appears that the 41-year-old Singh was the victim of an attempted robbery, said Romankow. During the struggle in which Singh was killed, it appears that Brinson was injured. This is based on evidence gathered at the scene, and other locations linked to Brinson.
Upon his arrest Brinson was taken to a local hospital for medical attention. He is charged with murder, robbery and weapon offences.
He is currently being held at the Union County Jail on $750,000 bail.
“This was a textbook example of law enforcement cohesion and cooperation that has ended in a successful apprehension,” said Director Zieser. “While our prayers are with the family of the victim, we thank God that justice has prevailed and the community is safer for it.”
Town Committeeman Peter Capodice who also serves as the police liaison to the town committee stated: “We are grateful that this person has been apprehended and will be off the streets unable to inflict harm on any others. Rest assured this Township Committee’s top priority is to continue to make Union a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”
The investigation is continuing.
These criminal charges are mere accusations.
The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. |
