Former Kent Place School Teacher Pleads Guilty to Relationship with Student

Warren Brown of Hillside; a former music teacher at a Summit private school pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault, after he admitted having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student

A former music teacher at a Summit private school pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault, after he admitted having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.

Warren Brown of Hillside was arrested in February after an investigation revealed that he had engaged in a sexual relationship with the girl, who was also one of his students at the Kent Place School, said Assistant Prosecutor David Hummel, who prosecuted the case.

Brown: DOB: 5/3/1941 was a music teacher at the school for nearly 15 years until leaving his position in the Fall of 2008. It was at the school that police said Brown met the victim in September 2007.

Interviews with the victim revealed that the relationship turned sexual in July of 2008, said Hummel and the relationship continued after Brown left Kent Place through activities outside of school for a period of several months.

An investigation was launched after the victim’s mother became suspicious. Sgt. Tom Rich of the Summit Police Department and Det. Patricia Gusmano of the Prosecutor’s Office conducted a through investigation that included searches of Brown’s home, the Kent Place School and his computer files. The investigators also conducted several interviews that corroborated the victim’s statements.

Brown was originally charged with one count of 1st Degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, one count of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault and one count 2nd Degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

Brown has remained in custody on $375,000 since his arrest. Brown faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 23 before Union County Superior Judge Douglas M. Fasciale.

Brown will also have to register under Megan’s Law, remain under parole supervision for life upon his release from prison and will forfeit any opportunity at future public employment.
