Authorities have charged a 22-year-old Elizabeth man with severely beating his father with a baseball bat on Thursday night, said Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
Around 7:20 p.m. last night, members of the Elizabeth Police Department were summoned to an apartment where they discovered the 48-year-old victim, suffering from severe trauma. While paramedics were assisting the injured man, his son returned to home and was identified as a suspect by his mother.
At that point, the 22-year-old was placed under arrest and was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon.
The man was charged under the state’s domestic violence statute, and cannot be publically named.
He is currently being held on $75,000 bail, said Romankow.
Given the severity of the victim’s injuries, the Union County Homicide Task Force is handling the investigation with assistance of the Elizabeth Police Department’s detective bureau.
As of this morning the 48-year-old remained in serious condition at University Hospital in Newark.
These criminal charges are mere accusations.
The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. |
