Police searching for inmate in Union County

Phillip Ruddy, inmate at the Union County

An inmate at the Union County Jail who had “trustee” status fled from a guard outside the jail this morning while on routine trash duty, announced Union County Prosecutor Theodore. J. Romankow.

Phillip Ruddy DOB: 10/17/1987 was admitted to the jail on June 1, 2009 and due to his low risk status, was put to work at the jail complex. One of his duties included supervised trash removal on Elizabethtown Plaza. He was at the Union County Jail in Elizabeth due to a parole violation. Ruddy is from Rahway.

Just after Midnight on Monday, Ruddy and another inmate were emptying trash in the plaza when, according to the investigation, he ran off. The corrections officer supervising the pair secured the other inmate and radioed for backup.

There is an active manhunt being conducted through the county.

At this point there are no plans for a formal press conference. Additional details will be released as soon as they become available.
