The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an incident that occurred in Linden late Monday night where an off-duty Newark Police Officer apparently discharged his weapon, striking two men, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
The officer, who joined the force earlier this year, was at the Swan Motel on Rt. 1 in Linden around 11 p.m. Monday when according to the preliminary investigation he was approached by the two men who attempted to force him into the room, said Romankow.
The off-duty officer fired several shots at the men who then fled the scene, said Romankow. A short time later, two men arrived at a North Jersey Hospital seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
At this point, detectives are waiting to interview all of the parties involved to get a better understanding of what transpired and if the two men seeking medical attention were involved in the incident at the motel, said Romankow.
This remains a very active investigation and additional information will be released as soon as it becomes available. |
