Union County Jury convicted an Elizabeth Woman of Aggravated Assault on
Monday for a brutal 2007 slashing that occurred in Elizabeth, said
Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
Ingrid Vanessa Batista, DOB: 8/4/1978 was convicted on 2nd degree
Aggravated Assault, two counts of 3rd degree Aggravated Assault and 3rd
unlawful possession of a weapon following a two week trial before Union
County Superior Court Judge James C. Heimlich.
According to the investigation on July 31, 2007 Batista and the victim,
Nekeda Gilchrist, DOB: 2/5/1982 also of Elizabeth got into an argument in
the courtyard of Mravlag Manor housing complex, said Assistant Prosecutor
Oded Weinstock, who handled the case.
“The fight quickly escaladed and Batista brutally slashed the
victim with a razor,” said Weinstock.
Gilchrist received two injuries, the first, a cut from her neck to her
chest that was so severe, that her breast bone was exposed. The second
cut was on the side of her chest, said Weinstock. She was hospitalized
for several days and required surgery for her injuries.
Batista faces up to 10 years in Prison when she is sentenced on July 10.
