Elizabeth River Circular and Union County's Bio-Bliz Event 2C6(H)
A 6-mile, circular, moderate paced 2-level hike. Elizabeth River Park is within the cities of Elizabeth, Union, and Hillside. Although this park is in an urban area, it is undeveloped, forested and surprisingly quiet. We'll hike on unmarked trails (some small ups/downs but no big climbs) next to the Elizabeth River and in other interconnecting parks. During the hike, we'll stop at Union County's Bio-Bliz 2008 event where participants can sign up for workshops, programs or view and interact with displays and scientists. The purpose of this Bio-Bliz event is to get a "snapshot" of the biodiversity of the area. Bring lunch, plenty of water, long pants, hiking boots. Bad weather cancels. The hike ends about 4:00 p.m. Public transportation: Take 10:14 a.m. NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Line train from NY Penn Station to Elizabeth, arriving at 10:42 a.m. Buy R/T ticket to (Broad Street) Elizabeth at a NJ ticket window or ticket machine. R/T fare: regular $9:25/seniors $5:00. Meet in the plaza in front of the M Cafe/Restaurant at the station. The hike will begin at this point. Driving directions: Take US 1-9 to Elizabeth, NJ.
The Elizabeth train station is on West Grand Street between Union St/Broad St. Meet L at the M Cafe 14-26 Julian Place, Elizabeth, New Jersey 07208. Free street parking might be available around the station. If not, parking is available at the indoor Central Parking Garage or outdoor parking lots surrounding the station. Leader: John Carr, 347-886-3070. If you have any questions, contact me preferably by telephone. |
