STEP 1: What could happen?

Find out what disasters could happen in your area during each season. Ask about your community's warning system.

STEP 2: Prepare a Disaster Plan

Discuss with your family what disasters could happen and what to do in them. Pick a meeting place in case you need to evacuate.

STEP 3: Post emergency phone numbers, teach everyone in the house about 911 and how to use it

Learn and show everyone in the house how and when to shut off the water, gas and electricity main switches. Install smoke detectors on every level of your home.

STEP 4: Practice your plan

Conduct fire and evacuation drills, test your smoke detector monthly, and change the batteries when you set your clocks ahead in the spring and back in the fall.
