STEP 1: What could happen? |
Find out what disasters could happen in your area during each season. Ask about your community's warning system. |
STEP 2: Prepare a Disaster Plan |
Discuss with your family what disasters could happen and what to do in them. Pick a meeting place in case you need to evacuate. |
STEP 3: Post emergency phone numbers, teach everyone in the house about 911 and how to use it |
Learn and show everyone in the house how and when to shut off the water, gas and electricity main switches. Install smoke detectors on every level of your home. |
STEP 4: Practice your plan |
Conduct fire and evacuation drills, test your smoke detector monthly, and change the batteries when you set your clocks ahead in the spring and back in the fall. |
