Union County Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski (C), Dr. Thomas Bistocchi (2nd L), Superintendent of Union County Vocational-Technical Schools (UCVTS), and Laura Inward and John Isherwood (2nd R) of Honeywell listen to UCVTS teacher Paul Savage explain a project involving solar panels during a “Green Boot Camp” for teachers on the UCVTS campus in Scotch Plains. Union County Vocational-Technical Schools and Honeywell hosted the Green Boot Camp for middle school teachers to help educators learn the latest methods for teaching green and sustainable topics to middle school students. The Boot Camp curriculum combines experienced UCVTS staff with Honeywell experience, tools and experts. Union County Vo-Tech Works to Expand Science Education that Leads to Green Jobs    
Union County Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski (3rd R) congratulates members of the Rahway Water Champions on their efforts in water conservation. The students presented their audit and cost/analyses of water usage at Rahway High School to federal and state environmental officials, executives from American Standard and county officials. The students believe the school could reduce its water use by two-thirds through water-saving plumbing upgrades. Rahway Water Champions Provident Bank Supports Sheriff's Gun Awareness Programs Charles Mancuso (L) of Provident Bank presents Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich with a check for $500 from the bank for the Sheriff’s gun awareness programs for young people. Recently, the Sheriff sponsored a contest for high school students around the county to produce a story about gun safety that could be made into an educational video. A team of students from Hillside High School first place with “Silence Kills.” The video is currently available to schools and youth organizations.
Cranford Girl Scout Troop 40668 celebrated their passage from Junior Girl Scouts to Cadettes with a Bridging Ceremony, conducted in a new garden they created with help from the Master Gardeners of Union County. Cranford Girl Scouts Create Garden with an Assist from Master Gardeners of Union County Free Concert by “Strawberry Fields” at Oak Ridge Park Features Music of the Beatles, July 28 Strawberry Fields is a band that features former members of the Broadway hit musical, “Beatlemania.” Their performance takes the audience on a Magical Mystery Tour through the 1960s, including favorite songs from the “White Album,” “Abbey Road,” and “Let It Be.” When it comes time for tunes from “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Strawberry Fields dons all the costumes featured on the famous album cover. Good Times Magazine says, “If you like the Beatles, you’ll LOVE Strawberry Fields.”

The $2.8 million reconstruction project was completed four months ahead of schedule.

Playground areas in three Union County parks underwent renovations recently and now they are ready for summertime fun. The playgrounds at Warinanco Park in Roselle (above), Mattano Park in Elizabeth, and Phil Rizzuto Park on the border of Union and Elizabeth all have new bonded rubber safety surfaces and innovative kid-friendly equipment. The renovation projects were funded in part with grant money from GameTime, one of the leading playground equipment companies in the United States. Union County Playgrounds Are Ready for Fun

Park Naturalist Erin White carefully searches under leaf debris for ants, slugs, sow bugs, millipedes and other tiny creatures with young participants in a “Mini-beast” program offered at Trailside Nature and Science Center. Families with children of all ages can enjoy learning about “Mini-beasts” – nature’s tiny recyclers on Friday, Aug. 13 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. The other Friday Family programs that have availability include “Bear Necessities” on July 2 or July 23, and “Geotykes” for rock collecting enthusiasts on Aug. 6.
