 on Horseback, May 2

Mountainside, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Trailside Nature and Science Center are pleased to offer a nature trail ride for adults, ages 18 and older, on Tuesday, May 2, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Watchung Stables in Mountainside.

“This ride offers adults a chance to see the Union County trail system on horseback,” said Freeholder Vice Chair Bette Jane Kowalski, liaison to the Union County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. “We’ve got more than 2,000 acres at the Watchung Reservation, so riders will have plenty of room to look, listen, and learn about local plants and animals.”

As dusk approaches, riders will saddle up and prepare to have fun! They’ll meander through the woods and fields and visit Lake Surprise on horseback. A park naturalist from Trailside Nature and Science Center will interpret sights and sounds of nature and identify interesting trees, plants and wildlife along the way.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. This program fills quickly. The fee is $35 per person for Union County residents and $45 per person for out-of-county riders. Each participant will receive a booklet with natural history information and tips on horseback riding. No riding experience is necessary. Participants are requested to wear sturdy shoes with a heel.

In the event of inclement weather, the trail ride will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 4. Call Trailside or the Watchung Stables on the program date to find out if the program has been postponed.
