Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders announced that the County has received a state Department of Transportation grant of $381,000 to replace a culvert on Vaux Hall Road. Designated as “Structure Un62,” the culvert is located between Burnet Avenue and Stahuber Avenue.
“Union County is a regional and national transportation hub and we take this responsibility very seriously,” said Union County Freeholder Chairman Daniel P. Sullivan. “We go beyond state and federal requirements to monitor, maintain, repair and when necessary replace our bridges and culverts in order to keep our roadways as safe as possible.”
Union County is responsible for 280 culverts and 140 bridges on County roads. It is one of only a few counties in New Jersey that funds its own culvert inspection program, which is conducted in addition to state and federal inspections. The County’s inspection report database was designed to be compatible with a state database that is currently under development.
“The availability of state funding is an important indicator that many of our County roads are heavily used by vehicles from outside of the County,” said Sullivan. “Structure Un62 is also a priority because it is located on the main access road for Union Township Fire Department Station 2.”
The culvert is almost directly in front of the fire station. It crosses the driveway but does not block the truck bays. It was built in 1939 and does not provide the load carrying capacity that is currently required for certain trucks.
The work will involve completely removing the existing structure and replacing it with a new three-sided precast concrete culvert, new wingwalls and parapets, a new roadway, and new sidewalks. The project is expected to start in spring 2011 and finish in summer 2011.
