Amateur Astronomers Begin Solar Observing Sessions
at Trailside Nature & Science Center, July 31

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI), and the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders welcome the public to visit Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside on Saturday, July 31, at 1:00 p.m., to view the sun through a special telescope.

Thanks to generous gifts and loans of various filters and other equipment from members of AAI, the group is able to use a Hydrogen-Alpha 60mm sidewalk astronomy telescope to view and photograph the Sun. Volunteers from AAI will staff the telescopic equipment on July 31 at Trailside for the initial session of what is hoped will be a regular Saturday presence for solar observation at Trailside.

The solar observing session also will involve a discussion conducted indoors by Ray Shapp, a Senior Qualified Observer who will discuss safety issues about looking at the Sun. Mr. Shapp’s presentation will begin at 1:00 p.m., rain or shine. Following the indoor session, the group will go outside for the solar observing, if it is sunny.
