Workshop Delves into Care & Keeping of Memorabilia and Historic Artifacts, May 22

PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders will sponsor a workshop on Saturday, May 22, about the care and storage of family memorabilia, local history ephemera and other artifacts. “The Care and Keeping of Family Treasures” will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Plainfield Public Library, located at 800 Park Avenue in Plainfield.

“If you’re interested in genealogy and local history, or just love to hunt for treasure at flea markets and estate sales, then you’ll want to hear from the experts about where to search and how to care for your discoveries,” said Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski, liaison to the Union County Cultural and Heritage Advisory Board.

Among the experts who will lead the discussions will be Cynthia Harris, director of the New Jersey Room at the Jersey City Public Library, and Mary Ellen Rogan, assistant director of the Plainfield Public Library. Speakers will cover a variety of topics including: hunting for artifacts at flea markets, garage and estate sales; transcribing family records; using online resources; and the care, identification, organization and storage of photographs, quilts and textiles.

Participants are encouraged to bring in an item for an Audience Show and Tell which will be held at the end of the panel discussions.

Presented by the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in the Union County Department of Parks & Community Renewal, in collaboration with the Plainfield Public Library, the workshop is funded in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.
