Voter Registration Including Name Change, Address Change, Signature Update

To qualify to vote, you must be a citizen of the United States and, by the date of the next election, at least 18 years old, NOT currently serving a sentence, probation, or parole because of a felony conviction, and a resident of NJ and Union County for at least 30 days.

Registration Deadline is 21 days before an election.

If you register to vote by mail for the first time in Union County, you will have to provide some form of identification. You must provide your driver's license number or the last four numbers of your social security number. These numbers are kept confidential and are not given to anyone.

If you do not have a driver's license number or a social security number, you can give a copy of a photo ID or a copy of a document that has your name and address on it. Here are some examples:

 

A current and valid photo ID, such as:

• NJ driver's license
• US passport
• military or other government ID
• student or job ID
• store membership ID, like a Sam's Club or Costco card

or any document with your name and address:

• bank statement
• car registration
• government check or document
• rent receipt
• utility bill
• any other official document

 

QUICK
TIP

You are not eligible to register to vote if you registered by mail after January 1, 2003 and did not provide ID before voting for the for the first time. You will have to show ID in order to vote in the voting machine at the polling place. If you do not show ID, you will have to vote by provisional ballot

Military/Federal Overseas Absentee Voting

Absentee voting privileges are available to military personnel, their dependents or patients in veterans hospitals or civilians attached to or serving with the military. Applications and information are available through the Election Office.

Permanent Absentee List

Permanently and totally disabled voters may request their name be placed on a permanent absentee voting list for all future elections.

Candidate nominating petitions for all elective County Offices including Freeholder, Clerk, Sheriff and Surrogate, and local elective candidates and independent candidates are available at the Election Office for distribution.

 

Political Party Affiliation

Voters who wish to declare their affiliation with a political party may do so by completing the form below and sending it to the Union County Board of Elections, 271 North Broad Street, Elizabeth, NJ 07208-3702. The form must be filed 50 days before the June Primary Election to be valid for that election.
